Scottish independence at 50/50 says new poll!

After a string of 22 surveys showing the majority of Scots are for independence, this new poll indicates that support for Scottish independence may be on the slide.

And that could be driven by the way that the main campaigner for independence, the Scottish National Party (SNP), has been shown to be incapable of governing a devolved administration, let a lone a sovereign independent nation.

The poll conducted by Survation for the Mail on Sunday and Express, has 44% of respondents favouring staying in the UK and 43% saying they would vote to leave the UK. Just about 50-50.

The results of the survey also showed that 43% of respondents believe the SNP has been in power too long, compared to 41% who disagree.

And on the Alex Salmond inquiry situation, 39% said there had been a government cover-up with only 32% who said there hadn’t.

This comes after an Ipsos Mori poll I talked about a couple of days ago, that showed support for both independence and the SNP had slipped back a bit.

This later one might show that a welcome trend is developing. Welcome for the pro-UK side anyway.

And it’s not just the Salmond inquiry that is alerting people to the sordid SNP. Although that saga is bad enough on its own.

There’s also things like problems with drug use, rusty unusable ferries and very importantly the out-of-the-limelight-at-present buried OECD education report.

Don’t let people forget those.

Voters may now be realising that the people at the top in their country are at best incompetent and at worst extremely dodgy. And that means the institutions they oversee are also, in all probability, tainted in exactly the same way.

I will remind people that polls are just snapshots of the views of an extremely small portion of the population at any given moment.

But the pro-independence side has been trumpeting the previous polls and saying they’re proof that the Scots want to leave the UK.

So expect them to try and discredit this one with its Daily Mail and Express connections and to also call i an outlier.

But we might be seeing a turning of the worm. And the end of the chance of a second Scottish Independence referendum (IndyRef2) for the foreseeable future.
